This soft fingering weight is blend of superwash merino wool to give a soft hand, and Lurex that adds a little sparkle. It is perfect for making statement garment or a beautiful scarf. This yarn behaves like any protein fibre yarn and dye up really well with natural dyes as well as acid dyes.
The merino wool we use are only from South America and are mulesing free. Lurex is the registered brand name of The Lurex Company, Ltd. for a type of yarn with a metallic appearance. The yarn is made from synthetic film, onto which a metallic aluminium, silver, or gold layer has been vaporized.
What is Superwash?
Superwash is a treatment applied to wool fibres which makes more resistant to shrinking. Our yarn is made in UK and adheres to the strict EU laws where any by-products must be removed from the water before it is discharged into the water systems.
Process overview: firstly the wool is treated in chlorine to dull the edges of the scales of the wool, this reduces the ability of the scales to stick to each-other and therefore reduces felting. Secondly a super thin coating of resin is applied to the fibres permanently bonding to the wool, this smooths the scales, improving the handle and also prevents felting. This resin biodegrades along with the wool when it goes to landfill.
Our range of Ready-To-Dye yarn are pre-scoured so you can focus on the actual dyeing. All you have to do is to fully wet out the yarn in warm water for at least 3 hours or overnight before mordanting and dyeing.
