Next session is happening 19-22 April 2024 (last session in our current studio).

Natural dyes were the only colours used before the first synthetic dye was invented in 1856 meaning all dyes used before came from mother nature – plants, insects, minerals etc. The age old craft of natural dyeing is still practised in many parts of the world however only very few places still do it today. We are very privileged to work with and learn from a handful of very talented artisans in Peru, Indonesia and India, and hope to spread the knowledge and artistry through our classes.

This is a FULL 4-DAY WORKSHOP where you’ll learn the art and science behind natural dyeing and get hands on dyeing up to 40 different hues. Each day will start at 10am and end around 4pm.

Dyeing alongside you in our Chinatown shophouse studio holds a special place in our hearts. This is our daily workspace, and we take immense pride in opening it up to you, allowing you to witness our daily life up close.

Our workshop is open to guests from all around the world. Regardless of your place of origin, everyone gathers at our studio at 10am on the first day of the workshop. We can recommend accommodation close by for your convenience. Workshop fee does not include accommodation.

Throughout the workshop, we will cover the following topics:

  1. Familiarise with commonly used dye plants
  2. Proper handling of yarn and fibres
  3. Using various mordants
  4. Preparing the dye baths
  5. Using ground materials and extracts
