Say Goodbye to Second Guessing Dye Recipes again!
When I first began my natural dye journey, each time before I dye something, I stared at the beautiful swatches but found myself asking:
• “Was this soft pink from sappanwood... or cochineal?”
• “Did I mordant this cotton with all-in-one or two-step method?”
• “How long did I leave the fabric soaking in the pot?”
It took so much extra time to recall what I did months ago and repeating experiments because I wanted to be sure of the outcome. I stared at the swatches without a clue how I dyed this or that colour, I got frustrated and ended up putting off dyeing a project.
An idea spark as I was flipping through my recipe journal before baking a cake and thought, “What if I could have a special book to record my dyeing experiments just like this one?”. A simple booklet that stores all the recipes, notes, and samples in one place. And that sparked my first dye logbook, I started to record my dye tests and observations.
After years of using a blank sketchbook to casually log my findings, I finally designed the ✨ Dye Atlas ✨ — a functional yet aesthetically pleasing way to organise dye swatches, recipes and observations.
This is the same natural dye journal I now use in my studio—and at our retreat.
